Vol.2 Ep.2: Blade Runner and all things slo-sci-fi!!!!

                   VBR MP3 download

Welcome to Volume 2 of Elevating the Genre! This is where we follow theme months for a full year. This new format will allow Dom and Christopher to dig into things on a much deeper level and allow ideas to cross-over from episode to episode.

October is Sci-Fi trope month and we cop-air-car glide from the utopianish vision of Star Trek, and get shot down with a funky trashman harpoon into the dystopian fun-land that is the (now) Blade Runner series!

Episode 1; Vol 2: October is Sci-Fi Month! Starting with Star Trek!!!!

                   VBR MP3 download

Welcome to Volume 2 of Elevating the Genre! This is where we follow theme months for a full year. October is Sci-Fi trope month and we kick it off with the mother of all Sci-Fi IP’s: Star Trek (it’s in it’s 50th anniversary and the new show Discovery has dropped).

This new format will allow Dom and Christopher to dig into things on a much deeper level and allow ideas to cross-over from episode to episode. So come along for the ride folks! First up is the Prime Directive, post-capitalist Utopia, techno-babble, and it’s ilk… and Christopher makes up a Star Trek term that he is CONVINCED is a thing… but it is NOT… wait for it… wait for it…

stewart
(No, this isn’t it… but this is Patrick Stewart in Lifeforce getting puppetized and drained of blood… fuck you, it’s Halloween… we need this kinda thing.)

Christopher can find NO proof for his Mulgrew story (and in fact it might’ve been the fact that Genevieve Bujold was cast and then left), however, here is a thread backing up his Roddenberry humanoid alien rule:

We gots a guest host, the incomparable Mr. Zay Amsbury! He’s all kinds of awesomely writerly, podcasterly, geeky dudeliness. We are honored to have him on while Dom is off at his writing retreat doing his own awesomely, writerly things. GO DOM! Zay is here to discuss with Christopher all things Doctor Who: classic and new. Including: the Doctor Who delivery system that was public television in the 70’s and 80’s; what makes a good doctor; and why is so god-damn important that the good Doc eventually NOT be a white dude.

Episode 18: Cross-Dressing Voices In Cartoons (w/ guest host Katie G)

4th in our series of guest hosts is Katie G, here to discuss the trope of cartoon characters voiced by actors the opposite of the characters’ main gender, a.k.a. cross-dress voice acting, specifically in iconic cartoons from the 90’s up til now, even more specifically a lot about Tina from BOB’S BURGERS. Also, we play a possibly delightful voiceover game (V.O.O.O.C. – Voice Over Out Of Context) and tangentialize on Bart Simpson, Yellow Dancer of ROBOTECH, VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER, and also the eternal search for meaning!

Episode 17: HULK AS PUNY CULTURAL PHENOMENON

Our Guest Host today (Chris is still shooting a feature film) is Greg Pak, writer, filmmaker, and preeminent scribe of Marvel’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We discuss the Hulk’s relevance as a symbol of repressed/channeled rage and strength, with insider insights from Greg’s work as a creator of the PLANET HULK/WORLD WAR HULK storylines, Amadeus Cho (the current, Asian-American Hulk) and also tidbits about Greg’s work on the John Carpenter mash-up comics series and his creator-owned work. Enjoy, and SMASH.

Touched upon: Watchmen, Spider-Man, Star Trek, Scully of The X-Files, Asimov’s Foundation Series, Stardew Valley, and U2, absolutely not in that order.

Errata for Episode 12: Sidekicks:
Comics Code History: By the early 2000s, publishers bypassed the CCA and Marvel Comics abandoned it in 2001. By 2010, only three major publishers still adhered to it: DC Comics, Archie Comics, and Bongo Comics. Bongo broke with the CCA in 2010. DC and Archie followed in January 2011, rendering the Code completely defunct today.
Green Hornet: The character debuted in The Green Hornet, an American radio program that premiered on January 31, 1936, on WXYZ, the same local Detroit station that originated its companion shows The Lone Ranger:

Episode 8: Superheroes and Politics

This week, of all weeks, it’s Superheroes and Politics. We go over multiple properties and their political leanings and the political ideologies behind supers in general. Hey, it’s a bit of an antidote to the shit-storm of the American election. 😉

Morrison’s Mistakes (from last episode)
Victor Wong and Kerouac did meet in SF written into Big Sur. (Studied art under Mark Rothko! Showing at City Lights, met all the beats.)
James Hong: 415 vs Shakespeare: 1,118 on Imdb
Aliens: 1986 vs Die Hard: 1988
Mephisto doesn’t have horns or a tail and DD and Mephisto met up during Inferno (I also said Fall of the Mutants which was before Inferno and gots nuthin’ to do with Mephisto.)

Episode 6: Sigourney Weaver and the Alien Franchise (and a lot of MCU Netflix speculation on her casting)

It’s the queen of sci-fi herself: the immortal Ms. Weaver. We cover a lot of ground in this one. Her work, casting stuff, some Dr. Strange magics in, what makes Aliens an acting clinic, and other amazing things!

Episode 2: MCU’s Netflix Shows

Episode 2 where we discuss all things MCU on Netflix (including shows that haven’t even dropped yet!)

Next up some definitions to help you figure out what the hell this podcast is all about (however, I recommend you give a listen to our Episode 0 for a deeper understanding: https://elevatingthegenre.wordpress.com/2016/09/16/episode-0/):

Morrison’s original definition of “Elevated Genre”:
Genre films that tackle “hi-concept” sci-fi concepts on a limited budget focusing on character and “reality” with the concept relegated to the background of the movie. As opposed to a big budget blockbuster where the concept becomes the driving force of the film.

Elevating the Genre Podcast working definition:
Any element in any “genre” (re: geek) piece of IP/story that raises that piece (or a moment or element in the piece) above the normal expectations of that genre.

(These will be the last week for the above definitions.)

Episode 1: Chris Claremont’s Run On Uncanny X-Men

Here it is folks! The exciting Episode 1 where we discuss all things Chris Claremont’s run on the Uncanny X-Men! That’s right, there’s geekery galore as Christopher and Dom run amok on your favorite mutants and their most profound creator/writer (and discuss other properties his run influenced and why we think the X-films mostly suck.)

And another round of apologies for the sound. We are figuring it out, and getting better all the time… just not this time. We are on separate continents (excuses, excuses… I know). Almost there however.

Episode 0

Welcome everyone! This is Episode 0. You can start here or return here to find out what Dom and I were REALLY thinking when we started this goofy thang!

First up APOLOGIES for sound. It’s weird as all get out as this was our first attempt. And mostly, apologies to Mr. Mah himself as it’s his audio in particular that suffers. We’re working on it.

Second up APOLOGIES for Mr. Mah being half on screen ALSO due to the fact we’ve never done this. But his shiny presence shines on through for sure. (I’m seriously not trying to make Dom look and sound bad, it just happened.)

Third up some definitions to help out:

SUGGESTION BOX

That’s right. We’re strange and weird and stuff. Our first post is our suggestion box. Listen to Ep. 0 for the birth of the box. We’re taking suggestions on what you’d like us to cover/talk-your-head-off-about. Remember we are NOT: a review site; a film podcast; we only unbox ideas; have pictures of animals (at least not yet).
We ARE: interested in discussing all things smart, original genre. Some of those things MIGHT be:
powers; magic systems; score; fights; set-pieces; plot structures; character beats; creators; etc.

In other words we break down things that elevate genre works beyond what they are stereotypically considered to “be”. Smart, engaging, elevated stuff. We want to know what you want us to talk about. In the comments please lease leave your:
1. Suggestion
2. Your name (if you wish, if you do put it and DON’T want the accompanying shout-out just let us know… or, you know, don’t leave your name) and how to pronounce it, please.
3. Where you are listening/tuning-in from (if you wish, but it helps us if you do).
